Two prominent Niger Delta activists and Itsekiri rights’  crusaders, Chief Ayirimi Emami and Chief Rita Lori-Ogbebor have emerged the 2016 Most Dedicated Chiefs to Itsekiri course in the male and female categories respectively, Fresh Angle International can authoritatively report.

The award christened ‘Itsekiri Champions Award, ICA, 2016’ was organized by The Foundation For Development and Community Engagement, FDCE in conjunction with the Itsekiri Advancement and Heritage Group, IAHG.

Our Correspondents report that while Koko defeated Ugborodo, Omadino, Ugbuwangue and Ugbori to win 2016 most peaceful community in Warri Kingdom, Hon. Daniel Mayuku and Engr. Victor Wood polled superior votes to defeat others in the Most Outstanding Political Office Holder and Political Appiontee respectively.

The award ceremony which held Friday December 30 in Warri, Delta State and was largely ignored by most of the awardees, especially the political class, also witnessed the presentation of awards to Outstanding Itsekiri Youths such as Alero Tenuma, Ofe Nene, Adrian Edema and Mrs. Tos Kukune, for their contributions toward the development of Itsekiri Nation, both “on ground and in the social media”.

Speaking at the abandoned Ubeji police station the President of the INYC Comr. Weyinmi Agbateyiniro said they are there to ascertain what the need of the station is, to bring it to operation. He went further to state that based on their findings they have found that the station needs to be refurbished and the police commissioner need to post police there to make it fully operational, hence the INYC have set up two committees to get this done within the shortest possible time.

N-DELTA: Itsekiri Group Sends Warning Signal to FG

Sapele—The Iwere Peoples’ Congress, aka, Agbukumasa, the self defence arm of the Itsekiri ethnic nationality, which came into existence during the Ijaw and Itsekiri communal crisis between 1997-2003, yesterday, warned that the fact that the Itsekiri people were not known for violence should not mean that they cannot carry out violence.

It subsequently called on the Federal Government and oil companies in Itsekiri land to stop divide and rule antics and modern day slavery of the people, or be prepared to face their wrath.

The group, through its National Coordinator, Prince Ekwejunor-Etchie Okorodudun, said:

“The Nigerian State and its administrative component called Delta State have abandoned their constitutional role towards an ethnic nationality that is part of their geographical and constitutional authority – the Itsekiri nation.”

“Successive governments have failed the Itsekiri nation as they could not provide the necessary security, protection of the Itsekiri people, land and property during the crisis. We are accusing the government of lack-lustre and lackadaisical behaviour.

Itsekiri Education Trust Awards Scholarships to 13 Undergraduates

WARRI—To bridge the gap in education in Warri Kingdom, the Itsekiri Education Trust, IET, has awarded scholarships to 13 Itsekiri undergraduate students studying in various universities across Nigeria.

Presenting cheques for the scholarships in Warri, the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Ikenwoli, charged the awardees to key into the vision of IET by making judicious use of scholarships given to them and continue to be law abiding students in their various institutions across Nigeria.

The Olu of Warri, who was represented by the Ewolufun of Warri Kingdom, Chief Rowland Omagbemi, charged the awardees to maintain good grades in their academic work, and shun activities that will distract them from their academic pursuit especially cultism which is prevalent in our universities.

“The scholarship given to you is not meant for frivolous things, it is meant for the purchase of books, research and academic endearvous that will enhance and improve academic studies that will enable you excel in your various areas of study and stand out as good ambassadors of the high moral value of Warri Kingdom.

Kings of the Delta (The Itsekiri's)

The Itsekiri (also called the, Isekiri, Itsekri or Ishekiri or Itsekhiri) are a peculiar and unique riverine people who were traditionally fishermen and skillful traders living in the Nigerian Niger delta. They have inhabited their homeland, which now constitutes the three Warri Local Government Areas of Delta State, Nigeria, for centuries. The Itsekiri make up an appreciable proportion of the modern towns of Sapele, Warri, Burutu, and Forcados. The Itsekiris traditionally refer to their land as the Kingdom of Warri or 'Iwere' as its proper name.
Historically Itsekiri are said to have migrated from Egypt to their present day location in Nigeria. According to Jackson Omasanjuwa Ireyefoju and Florence Ejuogharanmakelesan Ireyefoju in their seminal work "Ife Oracle in Itsekiri Social System of Nigeria," Itsekiri people came from Egypt after the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. They arrived and settled in the present Warri Kingdom in about 28 B.C in Gborodo, Ureju and Ode Itsekiri. The leaders of the teams were Iset, Iweret and Ipi. Gborodo is very far from Ode-Itsekiri but they speak the same language without dialectal differences. The people of Gborodo have no quarter in Ode-Itsekiri like other ltsekiri settlements of the era of Olu Atogbuwa, Erejuwa I and Akengbuwu I. The people of Inorin, Omadino and Ureju are pre-Ginuwa, the first Olu in 1480 but the Olu and his people were quickly absorbed into Itsekiri language like the Romans who conquered the Greeks but were civilized by the Greeks.

We have won courts cases about Warri and Itsekiri, We have written good books about Itsekiri past but all that are not enough for the future of Itsekiri. we have not show much concern about the future of Itsekiri. We are so deep in concern about now that we forget tomorrow. where is Itsekiri going? Where is the road map to the future or our place and people. It seem there are few or no people to discuss criticaly with and to draw out a political road way for Itsekiri. The last 16yrs has seen Itsekiri loss.

Every event that is happening presently is shapening the kind of future for Itsekiri but it seem we are not in control of the events, everything is showing we are on the negative as an ethnic group. aside the fact that our people eat off development funds, we have sat down and allow ujon to tell Itsekiri what to do. Itsekiri is now follow follow to the point that Itsekiri that are no militants are begging for amnesty, our areas are bombed everyday and we sit and just look without any control. Companies are leaving our places and Warri have ultimately turn the city of pot holes, there is still no road to Ode Itsekiri etc

1894 EBROHIMI EXPEDITION: Itsekiri leaders eulogise Nana Olomu

ITSEKIRI Leaders, under the auspices of the Itsekiri Leaders of Thoughts, ILoT, yesterday, showered encomium on Nana Olomu, the last Governor of the Benin River (Itsekiri Country), describing him as a true symbol of African resistance against domination. They formally handed over some historical artefacts and books relating to Nana Olomu to the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, NCMM, for conservation and promotion of the country’s heritage. The artefacts, procured from London Museum and donated by ILoT Chairman, Mr Johnson Ayomike, related to the Famous Nana Olomu, the great merchant of the Niger Delta, the last Governor of the Benin River (Itsekiri Country). Nana vehemently resisted British Imperialism, and the military expedition carried out by the British on Ebrohimi,

THE LEGEND OF CHIEF LORI AND IGBA (1900 )

AJIGBA
Aja-Igba (otherwise known as Ajigba meaning, Igba's town) was one of the few settlements founded by women in Itsekiri social history.
Igba was a very wealthy and prosperous woman and was a native of Orugbo. She was married to a man called Eyekuonogba at Okere, Warri. The marriage was quite healthy and happy until an unfortunate incident happened between her and the husband who was a dignified polygamist.
On one occasion the husband bought and distributed cloth to all his wives but gave none to Igba whom he thought was too highly placed to wear that type of print material which was of comparatively low quality. He thought that he was acting in good faith but Igba felt slighted and cheated, in that if her husband could think of his other wives and bought cloth for all of them, she too, deserved to be recognised and given one. She would not accept the explanation and apology by her husband.
As she did pot want to move back to Orugbo to meet her parents she decided to establish her own village. She sailed along Orugbo creek, facing Ode-Itsekiri, and after some distance, she found a smaller creek on the right hand side, went into it and a little further down, she saw a much smaller creek. She went inside and at the end of that creek was dry forest land where she decided to establish her settlement.
At that time Prince Ogbobine was the head of Usele Village and as the whole of that area was the property of Prince Oritsemone Family of Usele, Igba went to Prince Ogbobine for approval and blessing to live there. Prince Ogbobine readily consented and went to the place to plant the town's Ikimi tree for Igba to establish the settlement where she and her children and other relations lived until she died. She had two sons for Eyekuonogban, i.e: Otuedon and Lori.

The Itsekiri are the ancient Egyptians {pre ginuwa history of itsekiri}

ITSEKIRI EXISTENCE 
BEFORE 1480 

The oral tradition Some people have wondered that if Isekiri existed in times pre-Ginuwa, ˜why are there no oral traditions to buttress the point?" The simple truth is that Isekiri tradition, like those of some of their neighbours, particularly the Ilaje, have some of these stories. Before Ginuwa, the Urejus, the Omadinos, the Irigbos, the Ugborodos, the Jegbos of Efurokpe, the Okposos of Gbolokposo, among others, started occupying Isekiri land, which then was much more extensive than it is now – stretching to the river Ramos area, now in Bayelsa state of Nigeria, they constituted the aboriginal inhabitants. These people were the aborigines, and are known as the Oma ale (the sons of the soil). According to most Yoruba, their people migrated through many places when they were coming from the south of Egypt. They stopped at different areas before they reached the present Yoruba land. Although the Yoruba know the Isekiri came in the series or waves of migrations, they tend to see the Isekiri as part and parcel of them and do not want to list Isekiri as a separate migrant in the same migration trend. Abiola says, concerning this Egyptian migration:

A King of Warri once had a very pretty daughter who was called Emenugo. She was a beautiful princess who was in her day called the Queen of Beauty.

In those days cohabitation between the royals or children belonging to the same family tree was punishable by death. Sadly Princess Emenugo had become a victim of this law and having been found guilty of the offence was to be killed.

The Olu who was reluctant to surrender her princess daughter sort to gain the nation consent to the alteration of this law. For the nation not to suffer from the change of such law, the King ordered consultation of Oracle to inquire for the best way of amending the law.

The Oracle decide that Princess Emenugo was to be made a living sacrifice in order to atone for the soul of future generations who might become guilty of same crime.

WARRI—THE Ajuwaoyiboyami of Warri Kingdom, Delta State and business tycoon, Chief Ayiri Emami, aka Akulagba, has opened up on the reason for his disagreement with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and former General Officer Commanding, GOC, Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo. Chief Ayiri, past chair of the Delta Waterways Security Committee, DWSC, Warri and stalwart of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in the state, alleged that ex-President Jonathan declined to create the much-needed opportunity for Niger-Deltans to acquire Oil Mining Licenses, OMLs to develop the area, whereas outsiders were empowered, while Tompolo’s idea of activism was purportedly violence-inclined.

The Itsekiri leader, who spoke to Niger Delta Voice in Warri, asserted that he does not believe in using pipeline vandalization and kidnapping to draw attention to the problem of the region, but it is unquestionable that government has wickedly neglected the region.

He, however, observed that few misguided Gbaramatu-Ijaw persons and his Itsekiri tribesmen were blackmailing him because he was against their bunkering and kidnapping activities and prepared at all times to expose their criminal acts. Excerpt.

An Itsekiri leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, Ayiri Emami, has raised the alarm over an alleged threat to his life by unknown persons suspected to have masterminded the multiple attack on oil and gas installations around Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area (LGA) of the State.

Ogiame Ikenwoli who was crowned Olu of Warri in a colorful ceremony at Ode-Itsekiri barely two weeks ago, made the assertion in a New Year message recently issued in Warri.

The Olu stated that the people must see service to God and man as a duty and take pride in the dignity of their labour, emphasizing that any shortcut to success could only be temporary. He advised that the people must go back to their roots in terms of promoting agriculture, fishing and fish processing, mat weaving and other arts and crafts for which the riverine people are renowned, and as a panacea to tackling unemployment and earning reasonable steady income.

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Ikenwoli has admonished Youth Presidents in Delta State and other parts of Niger Delta not to pay lip service to peace, saying truth is vitally important for peaceful co-existence and everyone should work towards genuine peace building.

The Warri Monarch handed down the advice Monday January 4, 2016 at his Palace in Warri, Delta State when he played host to youth Presidents of Ijaw, Urhobo, Isoko, Ndokwa and Itsekiri ethnic Nationalities.
While blaming politics for the disharmony that occasionally occurs among ethnic groups in Delta State, the Olu advised Youth Presidents in Delta State to communicate more among themselves to erase mistrust and disharmony.
